Who Requires A USDOT Number?

39 states require commercial vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT Number.
Additionally, you require a USDOT Number if you operate a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce (i.e., across state lines) and meet any of the following criteria below.

Vehicle Type

  • One of your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 10,001 pounds (4,536 kg) or more.

  • Your base state requires you to apply for a USDOT for Intrastate Authority

Passenger

  • Transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for compensation.

  • Transport more than 15 passengers (including the driver), not for compensation.

Brokers & Hazmat

  • The vehicle is used to transport hazardous materials in quantities that require a safety permit.

  • You operate as a Freight Broker, Freight Forwarder, Intermodal Equipment Provider or a Cargo Tank Facility.
